SEO Consulting From a Practitioner Who Still Does the Work
Most SEO consulting is one of two disappointments: a strategist who hands you a deck and vanishes, or an agency that sells you a retainer and assigns a junior. I run the third thing. Senior judgment and hands on the actual work, from the same person, accountable for the outcome rather than the deliverable. If you are specifically vetting expertise and want the proof, credentials, and results in one place, see my SEO expert page.
Eighteen years, fifty-plus brands, and a body of published work you can check before you call: case studies with real numbers, teardowns of my own failures, and field notes from live client emergencies. SEO consulting should be provable before it is paid for, and mine is.

Fixed-scope engagements
A defined problem with a defined outcome: a full audit, a growth roadmap, a migration plan, a funnel rebuild. Delivered in weeks, priced upfront, no open-ended retainer required.

Monthly senior ownership of your SEO: strategy, priorities, execution or oversight, and the number reviewed every month. For companies that want the direction and the hands in one place.

For teams that execute well but need senior judgment: priority calls, campaign reviews, hiring input, and a sounding board that has seen your problem before at other companies.

SEO Consulting Questions
Consultant, agency, or in-house, how do I choose?
If you know exactly what to execute and need volume, an agency fits. If you need it owned full-time and can afford it, hire in-house, and I will help you hire well. If you need senior direction, judgment, and accountable execution without either overhead, that is consulting, and that is me.
Do you only advise or actually implement?
Both. For SEO and content I often execute directly; for paid and email I direct your team or vendors and stay accountable. What I never do is deliver a strategy document and disappear.
What does consulting cost?
Fixed engagements are priced by scope; retainers by the level of ownership. One call gives you a number. There is no penalty pricing designed to force you into a retainer you did not want.

How an SEO Consulting Engagement Actually Runs
Most consulting proposals describe deliverables. What founders actually want to know is how the months feel, where the money goes, and what changes on their site while they are paying for it. Here is the real sequence, not the sales version.
Weeks 1 to 3, the diagnostic. Before I recommend anything, I live inside your data. Search Console query and page reports, GA4 conversions by landing page, a full technical crawl comparing what Google renders against what your visitors see, a backlink profile review, and a competitive teardown of the two or three sites actually beating you. This ends in one document: a prioritised map of what is capping your growth, ranked by revenue impact against effort. Some clients take that map and run it themselves, and I am genuinely fine with that outcome.
Months 1 to 2, the foundation. The unglamorous work that every later gain depends on. Technical debt cleared, rendering and indexation fixed, internal architecture rebuilt so authority flows to the pages that make money, and measurement wired so we can both see what is working. Traffic rarely moves much here, and that is normal. This is the month clients get nervous and the month that decides everything after it.
Months 3 to 6, the build. Content and authority. The decision-stage pages that convert, the category or product pages that carry commercial intent, the topical clusters that establish you as the answer, and the digital PR that earns links no template mill can replicate. This is where rankings start moving and where organic first becomes a real revenue line rather than a traffic chart.
Month 6 onward, the compound. The flywheel. Rankings reinforce each other, links compound, and the cost of every new ranking drops because the domain is now trusted. My hours often step down here, because a system that needs constant firefighting was never really built. Success looks like needing me less, not more.
When You Actually Need an SEO Consultant (and When You Do Not)
Consulting is leverage for judgment, not a substitute for having a business worth marketing. Here is the honest version of who benefits.
Bring in a consultant when: your traffic has stalled despite effort and nobody can say why; your rankings fell after a Google update and the panic diagnosis was wrong; your in-house team executes well but nobody owns direction; you are about to replatform or redesign and want to protect years of equity; or you are ready to treat organic search as a compounding asset rather than a line item. These are the situations where senior judgment pays for itself in avoided mistakes alone.
Do not hire a consultant yet when: you have no product-market fit, because SEO amplifies demand that exists rather than creating demand that does not; when you need revenue this month, because SEO builds next quarter and paid channels carry this one; or when your budget is small enough that it is better spent on execution than advice. A consultant who takes your money in those situations is selling, not consulting, and I will tell you so on the first call.
What SEO Consulting Costs, and Why the Cheap Option Is the Expensive One
Pricing is where most consultant pages go quiet, so let me not. SEO consulting sits in a few honest bands, and knowing them protects you from the two ways people waste money on this.
The trap tier, under a few hundred dollars a month. The template mills. They sell rankings for keywords nobody searches, publish thin content on autopilot, and build links that become a liability. It looks affordable until you count the year you lost. This is the expensive option wearing a cheap price tag.
Fixed-scope engagements. A defined problem with a defined outcome: a full audit, a growth roadmap, a migration plan, a funnel rebuild. Priced upfront by scope, delivered in weeks. The right entry point if you want the map before committing to the journey.
Ongoing consulting retainers. Monthly senior ownership of your SEO, priced by the depth of involvement and the competitiveness of your market. This is where compounding growth actually happens, because SEO rewards consistency more than intensity.
I do not publish a single headline number because a fair price for a 40-page B2B site and a 40,000-page store are not the same, and pretending otherwise is how you end up overpaying or underscoped. What I will do on the first call is give you a real number for your actual situation, with no penalty pricing designed to trap you into a retainer you did not want. The honest rule of thumb: your SEO investment should be a fraction of the revenue the channel is expected to return, and if a consultant cannot model that return with you, that tells you something.
More Questions Founders Ask
How long before I see results from SEO consulting?
For an established site, meaningful ranking movement typically appears within 3 to 6 months, with real revenue contribution following in 6 to 9. New sites or competitive niches take 9 to 18 months to build a serious channel. Anyone promising page one in weeks is selling volume, not outcomes.
Do you work with clients globally?
Globally. My clients span the US, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. SEO consulting is research, strategy, and coordinated execution, all remote-friendly, and clients in Western time zones often get an overnight-turnaround advantage.
Can you work alongside our existing agency or in-house team?
Yes, and it usually makes them better. Agencies and internal teams perform more sharply when someone senior sets direction, reviews the work with an experienced eye, and holds the strategy accountable to revenue. I bring the judgment; they keep the execution.
What makes you different from an SEO agency?
With an agency you are usually sold the founder in the pitch and handed a junior in delivery. With me, the person you hired does the thinking every session. Add cross-industry pattern recognition from 50+ brands and no conflict of interest, no ad spend to inflate, no link inventory to sell, and the recommendation you get is simply the one that helps you.
What if SEO turns out to be the wrong investment for us?
Then I will say so, on the first call, before you have paid for anything. Trust built by turning down a bad-fit engagement outlasts any single retainer, and it is the reason the clients who do stay tend to stay for years.
